Understanding How the Hip Works

To understand hip fracture surgery, it helps to first understand how the hip works. The hip joint is called a ball-and-socket joint, where the head of your femur bone nestles in your hip socket to provide range of motion. A hip fracture involving the femoral neck refers to a break that happens to the femur directly below the head. A hip fracture can also involve the upper part of the femur bone, in the region below the femoral neck, and is called an intertrochanteric fracture.

Hip Pinning

Hip pinning is a type of hip fracture repair surgery that’s best for repairing fractures to the femoral neck when the bones are relatively well aligned. The procedure uses metal screws through a very small incision to hold the bone together and provide stability until it has a chance to heal.

Below the Femoral Neck

Fractures to the area below the femoral neck, or intertrochanteric region, are often repaired using a rod placed inside the shaft along with a large screw into the femoral head to hold the fracture while it heals.

Total Hip Procedure

Total hip replacement surgery in the Phoenix area is recommended if the damage from the injury can’t be repaired by hip pinning or a partial replacement. In this case, we’ll replace the entire hip joint with artificial prostheses made of metal, ceramic and plastic.

Partial Hip Procedure

If you’ve only injured your femoral neck but your hip socket is fine, you’ll likely need a partial hip replacement. With this procedure, we’ll replace the ball or upper portion of your femur with a strong artificial part. It’s best for adults who live alone and have health conditions or cognitive impairment. This surgery isn’t recommended for damage caused by arthritis
